2025 - My Year in Review

Image
It's time for my yearly geocaching review! I don't feel like I accomplished much, but maybe I did? I found less than 200 caches, but still more than the previous year. I missed out on two official souvenirs, the International Geocaching Day Hider and the GIFF 2026. I overthink putting out caches, so in my desire to put out a quality cache, I missed the window. I actually never put the cache out at all, so I even missed qualifying for the next round of Virtual Rewards. And then, I was on a cruise for the entire period of the Geocaching International Film Festival. I did, however, complete nine treasure collections, two of which had souvenirs, so I decided to make homemade souvenirs for the other seven. I'd have to say that my favorite part of last year was attending GeoWoodstock in West Virginia and completing the Country Roads Challenge and enough of the Middle of Everything GeoTour to qualify for the geocoin. We visited some really interesting places and I really...

An Announcement About Treasures

Image
Being a Premium Member has it's perks, especially when collecting treasures. Instead of being able to collect treasures for three different collections, which you have to select ahead of time and ensure that they are in the priority list, all treasure collections are open and available for collection. Premium members can prioritize five collections, but can still collect treasures from non-prioritized collections, as long as the toggle is in the correct position on the Treasures page . That way you can collect treasures now, or later, and you choose which collection fills up first. Another new perk for Premium Members, cache pages have a new selection in the upper-right menu - "View Treasures." Click on that to see which treasure collection(s) that particular cache qualifies for. It seems like that will come in handy. I've had times where I've switched between maps of different collections in order to plan a trip in order to get the most treasures, and it ...

Image
Guess what just came in under my radar. Yup, a new treasure collection. It'll be a while before I complete this collection!

October Treasures

Image
Oooo look, new treasures! We've got two new treasure collections coming down the pike, and they look interesting. The way I read it, the first requires Premium Membership. Kind of crazy, I know, but I decided years ago that although I hate having to pay for anything that could be free, I wanted to support Geocaching and all that they do to create this hobby that I enjoy so much. I can't even imagine all the work that goes into it, and to support millions of people - so yeah, I bit the bullet and started paying for a Premium Membership. Anyway, the River expedition puzzle collection is just that, a puzzle, and it's laid out like a difficulty/terrain grid, from 1 to 2.5 in either direction. So, sixteen treasures, one of each difficulty/terrain combination, all geocache types, except events and Adventure Lab locations. As an added bonus, you get a souvenir upon completion, pretty cool! More information about this collection can be found on the official blog post . I ...

AAR: Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area US 250th GeoTour

Image
This weekend, Tom and I started - and completed - the Heart of the Civil War US 250th GeoTour . This GeoTour was released on September 19, 2025, and it brings geocachers to the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, three counties in Maryland where there is a lot of history from that time. We had completed the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area GeoTrail several years ago, and while we visited several of the same sites this time, the GeoTour focused more on the general history of some locations, rather than their relationship to the Civil War. This GeoTour consisted of 21 geocaches of all types that needed to be found or completed to earn the souvenir, but 15 physical caches had to be found, and the code words inside recorded, to be eligible for the geocoin. As a "bonus," for three of the mystery caches, Adventure Labs had to be completed in order to receive the coordinates. There were also two GeoTour-related events (Kick-Off and Coin Redemption events), as well as a...
