2024 - My Year in Review
Well, my geocaching year was pretty uneventful. I ended up finding less than 200 geocaches - to include Adventure Labs - but I was able to earn every souvenir available this year.
I think my best (and proudest) achievements were finding a few geocaches in Asia, when I went on a short trip to Vietnam to visit family. I found some Adventure Labs at the airport in Tokyo, and was unable to locate one, so I tried to guess where the bonus cache would be. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it, and came close to missing my connecting flight. The Adventure Labs didn't earn me a souvenir for Japan, so I created my own, and if I'm ever passing though the airport in Tokyo again, I know exactly where to go to earn the actual souvenir. I found both Adventure Labs and physical caches in Vietnam, as well as attended an event, so I earned a souvenir there. The airport in Korea didn't have anything easy to grab, so I missed out on that country.
My next best achievement was being asked to hide a geocache for Cache Across Maryland (CAM). CAM is a yearly event in Maryland, which takes place in March and April. Geocachers are taken all across Maryland - America in Miniature - to find enough geocaches to qualify for the geocoin. In years past, it was to qualify to attend the CAM Picnic, a geochecker would give us the coordinates to the picnic, but ever since COVID, anyone could attend, and the coin could only be earned by those who found the required caches. I hid a cache and two bonus caches - and feel honored to have been asked.
I guess my third achievement would be working on the American Revolution GeoTrail, even though we didn't complete it. During the July 4 weekend, Tom and I went back to New Jersey to attempt to complete the majority of the caches in that GeoTrail. We found enough caches to earn the geocoin a few years ago, and I told myself back then that we'd be back to see the rest of the locations. Unfortunately, the temperature exceeded 100 degrees on the final day of our trip, so we headed home early, but that gives us something to aim for in this upcoming year.
My additional goals for 2025 are simple - we plan to attend GeoWoodstock 21 in West Virginia and one of the cruises that we have booked this year stops in Antigua, so a new country souvenir would be terrific. Unfortunately, because of the dates of that cruise, we will miss out on the Geocaching Film Festival :-( Other than that, earning all of the other souvenirs to be offered this year is low hanging fruit. My usual goals are also up for grabs - assorted GeoTours that I've already started and need to finish, as well as the Bridges and Arches of Central Park geocache. I had a bunch of travel scheduled for 2024, so my geocaching opportunities were limited, but 2025 is almost wide open - I wonder where it will take us!
